Where is fire protection needed ?

Fire protection is required to all structural steel members - eg columns, joists and purlins.

When is fire protection needed ?

Generally fire protection is required on all floors upon which people will be working, and upon storage floors that are greater than 10m in either direction, or 20m in either direction where a compliant fire detection and alarm system is fitted.

Why is fire protection needed ?

Fire protection insulates the steelwork for a specified minimum period (Typically 1 hour) ensuring that it will stand for that period of time without collapse, and thereby ensuring that the fire brigade are able to get to a fire, ensure the building is evacuated and fight the fire safely.

What is fire protection ?

Fire protection is a method of protecting the steelwork from heat. It can take a number of forms - suspended tile and grid ceilings, plasterboard ceilings such as MF grid ceilings combined with metal clad insulated column casings and intumescent paints.

How is fire protection applied ?

Once the mezzanine floor had been erected, columns can be painted or casings can be clipped on, fascias and suspended ceiling grids fitted, and ceiling tiles, plasterboards fitted/finished as required.
